Along with 26 cities across the country, Kozhikode also stepped forward for an amputation-free India on National Vascular Day. The Walkathon literally took the city of Kozhikode by storm with more than 300 people including jawans of 122 Infantry Battalion along with StarCare Hospital, Vascular Society of Kerala, Vascular Society of India, Rotary Calicut Highlight City and Aham Arogya Foundation. Instrumental performances by the artists of the battalion served as a focal point for the ceremony and the Walkathon. The Walkathon, which started with the importance of exercise in a healthy life and strong awareness against limb amputation, was flagged off by Colonel Naveen Benjit, Commanding Officer of 122 Infantry Battalion and Rotary Club District Governor Dr. Sethu Sivashankar. The walkathon started from Mananchira (Calicut) at 7 AM and completed a 3 km city circuit via YMCA cross road and ended back at Mananchira itself. The slogan of the Walkathon was "Walk a Mile to Live with a Smile". Celebrities like RJ Manu (Red FM), Mr. India 2023 Sumesh Rao, Cricketer Gokul V, Ranju Govind etc came to Mananchira to support the walkathon. After the walkathon, the participants signed a specially prepared canvas and expressed their solidarity with the campaign. Ninety percent of limb amputations, which occur worldwide at a rate of one every thirty seconds, are 90 percent preventable if accurate and timely treatment is available. Limb amputation is the complete or partial amputation of the leg when the blood vessels in the leg are blocked and the wounds do not heal. This rate remains high only because of ignorance about vascular treatment. In this situation, there will be hopeful progress only with strong awareness, Dr. Sunil Rajendran, the head of the vascular surgery department of Starcare and the Captain of Walkathon spoke at the Flag-off event.
